Nylink

This class focuses on the structure and use of a widely-used metadata scheme in the publishing community: ONIX. ONIX stands for ONline Information Exchange, and is the international standard for representing and communicating book industry product information in electronic form. Developed by the publishing industry in the late 1990’s, ONIX is similar to library cataloging, but includes many elements containing trade information, promotional material, cover images, reviews, etc. Many institutions are working with this “upstream” metadata from publishers to streamline the process of bibliographic description for acquisitions and cataloging. Topics covered include: ONIX elements, comparison between ONIX metadata and library metadata, encoding guidelines, applications, and crosswalks.

Please note: This will be an online webinar, not a hands-on training class. All that is needed to attend is a computer with Internet access with a nearby phone for audio access. This presentation will run for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.
